“Together for a Period-Friendly World”

On May 28th, the Northern Girl Initiative – NGI, in proud collaboration with Hereafter Ghana My Hereafter Project and Community Action for Inclusive Development (CAID), celebrated International Menstrual Hygiene Day with the amazing students of St. Joseph Junior High School in Tamale. The day serves as a reminder that menstruation is a natural part of life and should never be a barrier to education, dignity, or equal opportunities for girls and women.

At Northern Girl Initiative, we join the global community to advocate for menstrual health as a fundamental right. Across many communities, especially in underserved areas, many girls continue to face challenges accessing sanitary products, clean water, and accurate information about menstrual care. These gaps often lead to school absenteeism, stigma, and reduced confidence among young girls. We engaged in open, empowering conversations about menstrual health, dignity, and body confidence working together to break the stigma and raise awareness.

A special highlight of the day was the donation of reusable sanitary pads to 50 girls. These eco-friendly pads were made by young women trained under our Climate Action Program, which teaches participants to create sustainable menstrual products empowering girls and protecting the environment.

As we commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day, Northern Girl Initiative remains committed to advocating for the rights, health, and well-being of girls. Together, we can build communities where every girl is empowered to learn, grow, and achieve her full potential without limitations caused by menstrual challenges. This year’s theme, “Together for a Period-Friendly World”, reminds us of the power of unity and we’re grateful for the beautiful collaboration that made this event possible.

Together, we are building a world where no girl is left behind because of her period.
